The Ultimate Psychology Resource!

This web site is dedicated to an exploration of various topics in psychology.  In 1969, the president of the American Psychological Association (APA), George Miller, gave a speech to the members of that austere group entitled, “Giving Psychology Away.”  In this speech, Dr. Miller indicated that psychologists are notoriously bad at telling the public what we have determined in (e.g., know from) and what we have not determined in (e.g., do not know from) our research projects in a way that can be applied to daily lives.  The APA president then suggested that we need to do a better job at “giving psychology away;” that is, telling the public what we do know and what we do not know in an applicable way.  Similarly, Robert B. Cialdini, in his Presidential address entitled, “Professionally Responsible Communication With the Public: Giving Psychology a Way,” to the Society of Personality and Social Psychology and Division 8 of the American Psychological Association, stated that, “The larger society, which has paid for social science, deserves a fuller and more meaningful exposure to what social scientists have learned with its money.”  This web site is an effort to “give psychology away,” to borrow the phrase from Dr. Miller and continued, in a fashion, by Dr. Cialdini.  My hope is that this web site will provide you with a plethora of resources in psychology and that you will leave feeling more edified in your knowledge of the vast subject matter represented by psychology.

My aim is to make this a “one shop” stop for all things related to psychology.  With some portions of givingpsychologyaway.net, such as the personality, clinical (especially individual), psychopathology, and psychopharmacology sections, I have included more generous amounts of information on specific topics of interest in these areas.  I have also begun to present some of the more interesting “controversies” in psychology in the “controversial issues in psychology” page.  As more are presented to me by those visiting this web site, and time permitting, I will endeavor to address them in turn.  In all instances, the pages in givingpsychologyaway.net (will) point to (e.g., include links to) information relevant to the topic listed.  As such, for example, the personality psychology section includes links to associations, journals, and books related to personality psychology.  Hence, this web site is designed as a sort of “psychology crossroads” for the world wide web, providing some refreshment on topics related to psychology while you are here and pointing visitors in the proper direction for their travels in pursuit of psychological knowledge.
