The study of personality is concerned with various styles of behavior that different organisms habitually reflect. A theory is a series of two or more schematic labels (words, visual images that we name, and so on) presumed, or even factually demonstrated to bear a meaningful relationship one with the other(s). In science, two or more theories can account for the same pattern of observed facts (often called laws). Theory and thought are two ways of describing the same thing. Just like thoughts, all theories are open to revision. Below are links to 3 theories of theorizing (metatheories) about personality on the basis of which it may be possible to study what various theoretical accounts of personality are trying to say: 4 Causes Metatheory—from Rychlak’s Personality and Psychotherapy Linearity Metatheory-from Slife’s Time and Psychological Explanation Naturalism Metatheory-from Chapter 3 of Lambert’s Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change Furthermore, two different models of general explanation have been described, in which we categorize the different grand theories of personality. Below is a link to this general explanatory framework: Constitutive v. Conceptual Models of General Explanation-from Rychlak’s Personality and Psychotherapy |
