As Brent D. Slife, Ph.D. pointed out in his book on Time and Psychological Explanation (link to the right), linear time has made a great impact on psychology, particularly through its fusion with such concepts as causality, change, process, and behavior. Psychology’s conception of “linear time” derived from a central assumption in Newtonian physics—the ideal of sciences during psychology’s formative years—which was termed “absolute time.” This concept of absolute time has influence scientific explanations—particularly psychological explanations—ever since. Five characteristics of such explanations have devolved from Newton’s temporal framework: objectivity, continuity, linearity, universality, and reductivity. |
