School Psychology |
|
School psychology, also known as educational psychology, involves the study of how individuals learn in an educational setting, the effectiveness of treatments of educational difficulties, the psychology of teaching, and the dynamics of schools as organizations. It is interested in processes undergone for the attainment of education in the general population, as well as in important special populations, such as the gifted and educationally disable/dysfunctioned. In universities, departments of educational psychology are usually found associated with educational departments, not psychology departments. This, perhaps, accounts for the lack of representation of educational psychology in most introductory psychology textbooks.
The terms “school psychology” and “educational psychology,” though often used interchangeably, in fact imply somewhat distinctive arenas of psychological practice: educational psychologists are usually involved more in research and theorizing, whereas school psychologists practice in schools or school-related settings.
